Abundant Borders has been been awarded almost £16,000 by the People’s Postcode Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
It will allow the organisation to work with local volunteers in Hawick to transform the neglected land behind The Salvation Army Community Store into a productive food garden.
The garden will be a mix of fruit trees, fruit bushes, flowers, vegetables, salads, herbs and shrubs.
The funding will also support FREE training places in sustainable growing and healthy eating.
Participants will learn about building soils, growing food and creating a space in which wildlife could flourish. They will also develop skills to grow self-dependency and tackle social exclusion. Participants in the healthy cooking course will learn how to turn food grown in the garden into a healthy, nutritious and inexpensive meals.
This latest funding boost comes on the back of a grant of almost £9000 from the National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme in September last year.
