Peebles Community Trust is set to purchase the town’s former ex-servicemen’s club, thanks to a grant of £189,200 from the Scottish Land Fund.
The club, which went into administration last year, is currently used by more than 100 community groups and its closure would have been a blow to the community. Now, the Trust will be able to make the facility available to even more groups.
Lawrie Hayworth, Chair of Peebles Community Trust, said: “Peebles Community Trust are pleased to have facilitated the long-term community ownership of this important building.
“We have been fortunate in the broad community support and community use through an access agreement whilst our grant application was being considered. We would also like to note the support of SLF beyond the initial purchase, which will allow us to start refurbishing and operating the School Brae Hub.”
Peebles Community Trust is one of ten community ownership projects which have shared in £2,819,430 from the Scottish Land Fund.
The Scottish Land Fund is funded by the Scottish Government and delivered in partnership by the National Lottery Community Fund and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, both of which have extensive experience of helping communities to acquire and develop their assets for over a decade.
